ONE-YEAR JOURNEY OF THE BIBLE
Day 35 -Leviticus 8-10 (Only One Way to God - His Way Not Our Way )

“Then Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered profane fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them.  So fire went out from the Lord and devoured them, and they died before the Lord. And Moses said to Aaron, "This is what the Lord spoke, saying: 'By those who come near Me I must be regarded as holy; And before all the people I must be glorified.' " So Aaron held his peace.”  (Leviticus 10:1-3)

At first reading, the death of Aaron’s sons, Nadab and Abihu seemed too harsh for doing a “good” thing the wrong way.  What was profane fire anyway?  Well, our text gives us the meaning which is fire “which He had not commanded them.”  Bible scholars say that it was fire that was not kindled from the altar which fire God Himself ignited.

Nadab and Abihu no doubt knew the regulations stipulated by God in their service to Him as priests.  God had a reason for each regulation and every single one of them was done in order to render to God the proper glory and honor due Him.  Nadab and Abihu were careless and thought that they could approach God their way instead of God’s way.

I believe that the severe punishment of Nadab and Abihu by God was to teach all the people that it was no light thing to disregard God’s laws.  God was teaching the Israelites then and us today that we need to approach God His way and not our way.  God is not the gods that many people today have created in their imaginations; gods who cater to every whim of man and accept any and all kinds of worship.

Have you been guilty of approaching God your way instead of His way?  God has given us His Word, the Bible, to teach us all of His ways that He has established in order for us to approach Him and that is only through His Son Jesus Christ.  Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through Me.”  (John 14:6)

Will you come to God through through Jesus Christ alone and not through any way established by man or religion?  Learn the lesson from Nadab and Abihu: God will not accept any other way except His way.
