Day 332 - Romans 10 - 12

ONE-YEAR JOURNEY OF THE BIBLE
Day 332 - Romans 10 - 12 (The Role of Public Confession in Salvation)
(To View Past Posts Click: http:/tonyvicreyes1-yearbible.blogspot.com/ ):

"if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.  For the Scripture says, "Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame."  For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him.  For "whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved." (Romans 10:9-13)

Many professing Christians say that they live their Christian lives by their deeds and not by their words.  I would say that is well and good as long as they are not ashamed to speak out for Christ whenever the need arises.

The importance of using our words and not just our actions in order to authenticate our faith is emphasize in our text above.  The apostle Paul declares with all boldness that a person is saved by believing in his heart as well as confessing with his mouth that Jesus is Lord and that God has raised Him from the dead to be the Savior of all who call on His name.

Pauls teaching regarding the role of believer's of public confession of faith in salvation raises an obvious dilemna for many professing Christians who refuse to publicly acknowledge their faith in Christ.  For example, are those who refuse to obey Christ's command to be baptized really saved considering the baptism is the ultimate public confession of faith of the believer?

I am not in any position to say who are those who are saved or not.  What I am in a position as a minister of the Lord Jesus Christ is to warn all to escape the punishment of sin by confessing with their mouth and believing in their hearts that Jesus is Lord as Romans 10:9 clearly teaches.

Have you confessed with your mouth and believed in your heart that Jesus is Lord and Savior?  If not, I urge you for your own soul's sake, do it now while you still can for the Bible says, " Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation (2 Corinthians 6:2b)."

Day 331 - Romans 8 - 9

ONE-YEAR JOURNEY OF THE BIBLE
Day 331 - Romans 8 - 9 (No Condemnation for True Christians)
(To View Past Posts Click: http:/tonyvicreyes1-yearbible.blogspot.com/ )

"There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death."  (Romans 8:1-2)

In my last devotional, we learned that the Bible teaches that there is no one who is good in the eyes of God and that all are guilty of sin and are subject to the punishment of sin which is death, both physical as well as eternal death.  In our Scripture reading today, we read how all who are in Christ through faith in Him will never be subject to God's condemnation of sin.

The apostle Paul explains that the reason believers in Christ will not be condemned is because they have been freed from the power and authority of the law of Moses, Christ having completely met the law's requirements in their behalf.  In other words, the only way the the law can condemn true Christians is if it can condemn Christ who took upon His own body the punishment of death meted by the law.

Paul expounds on this thought in in the last verses of chapter 8 of the book of Romans:

"Who shall bring a charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies.  Who is he who condemns? It            is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also                makes intercession for us.  Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or                    distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?... Yet in all these things we                are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.  For I am persuaded that neither death nor              life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor            depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in                Christ Jesus our Lord."  (Romans 8:33-39)

Someone might ask, "Is there any way at all for a true Christian to bbe condemned ffor his sins?" Technically, I submit that there is one way; that is, if anyone including the Christian, could convince God the Father to stop loving His only beloved Son Jesus Christ, then it would be possible for the believer who is "in Christ" to be separated from the love of God.  As Paul wrote, the love of God which saved us from condemantion "is in Christ Jesus our Lord."  Obviously, that would be impossible and therefore it follows that it is also impossible for a true Christian to be condemned.  Hallellujah!  The Gospel is good news indeed!

Day 330 - Acts 27 - Romans 7

ONE-YEAR JOURNEY OF THE BIBLE
Day 330 - Acts 27 - Romans 7 (Is There a Good Person in God's Eyes?)
(To View Past Posts Click: http:/tonyvicreyes1-yearbible.blogspot.com/ )

        As it is written:
        "There is none righteous, no, not one;
        There is none who understands;
There is none who seeks after God.
        They have all turned aside;
        They have together become unprofitable;
There is none who does good, no, not one."
        (Romans 3:10-12)

Our text above plainly answers the question/title of today's devotional.  Clearly, the Bible states that "there is none who does good, no, not one."  As if that isn't bad enough, the apostle Paul goes on to say in the same chapter, "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (verse 23)."  Then three chapters later, Paul adds that "the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23)."  Death here refers to both physical as well as spiritual death.

Sadly, I have witnessed to too many people who refused to believe in the gospel of salvation by faith alone apart from good works.  Even a child can understand that he or she is a sinner and that God will punish sin (the wages of sin is death).  Because of God's love for us, He did the only thing that can save us from the punishment of sin - He became a man in the person of Jesus Christ and took upon Himself the punishment that was due us.

In our next devotion, we will see how those who have placed their faith and trust in Christ alone will not incur the condemnation of God for sin.  If you are reading this and agree with God that you are not good in His eyes, I urge you to humble yourself and confess that you are a sinner and that there is nothing you can do to save yourself and cry out to God to save you through faith in His Son Jesus Christ.

Day 327 - Acts 19-26

ONE-YEAR JOURNEY OF THE BIBLE
Day 327 - Acts 19-26 (Almost a Christian)
(To View Past Posts Click: http:/tonyvicreyes1-yearbible.blogspot.com/ )

"Then Agrippa said to Paul, "You almost persuade me to become a Christian."   And Paul said, "I would to God that not only you, but also all who hear me today, might become both almost and altogether such as I am, except for these chains."  (Acts 26:28-29)

Through divine protection, the apostle Paul narrowly escaped a mob that tried to kill him in Jerusalem; thanks to the intervention of Roman soldiers.  Long story short, Paul ends up in Caesarea held in captivity first by Governor Felix, then by his successor, Governor Festus.

When King Herod Agrippa visited Festus, the latter thought it a good idea to present the case of Paul to the king.  Before King Agrippa and Governor Festus and all the commanders of the Roman army as well as all the prominent people of the city, Paul gave his defense and in the process shared the gospel to all those present.  Oftentimes, when we are persecuted for the sake of Christ, it is for the purpose of the spread of the gospel.

Our Scripture passage ends as one of the saddest testimonies of a person who almost became a Christian - I am referring of course to Herod Agrippa who, according to his own words declared to Paul, "You almost persuade me to become a Christian."

The greatest tragedy in a person's life is when he or she "almost" becomes a Christian.  Why?  Because almost a Christian means not being a Christian and Jesus said that only those who are His followers (Christians) will inherit eternal life.

If you have been reading this short devotional and you know that you have not yet made the decision to fully follow Christ (becoming a Christian) for whatever reason you may have which only you know, then I plead with you for your soul's sake to pause right now and confess your sins to Christ and ask Him to forgive you and save you.

Day 324 - Acts 12-18

ONE-YEAR JOURNEY OF THE BIBLE
Day 324 - Acts 12-18 (God Will Judge Idolaters)
(To View Past Posts Click: http:/tonyvicreyes1-yearbible.blogspot.com/ )

"God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands.  Nor is He worshiped with men's hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things...Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man's devising.  Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead." (Acts 17:24-31)

Threatened by the mob in Berea, Paul escaped and landed in Athens where he addressed a crowd gathered at the Areopagus and preached at the altar "unknown God" which they worshipped.  Paul minced no words about the sin of idolatry or the worship of idols - images made of metal, wood or stone made by the hands of men.

Expounding on the first two commandments of the Ten Commandments given to Moses, Paul explained to the Athenians that the one true God of creation "does not dwell in temples made with hands.  Nor is He worshiped with men's hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things."  Furthermore, Paul taught them "that we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man's devising."

Paul simply repeated to these people the commandment of God against idolatry.  Paul also warned them about the punishment that awaits those who practice idolatry.  He told them about the Day of Judgment that will come upon the whole world wherein all those who do not belong to Christ (those who do not obey Him) will be cast into everlasting punishment in hell (Revelation 21:8, Matthew 25:46).

Are you guilty of praying to idols made by hands?  Do you have any idols in your home meant to watch over you or to be prayed to?  If you are responsible for it being in your home or have the authority to put it out and get rid of it, you will be held accountable by God for the sin of idolatry.

Day 321 - Acts 6 - 11

ONE-YEAR JOURNEY OF THE BIBLE
Day 321 - Acts 6 - 11 (What Makes a Person a True Christian?)
(To View Past Posts Click: http:/tonyvicreyes1-yearbible.blogspot.com/ )

"Then Barnabas departed for Tarsus to seek Saul.  And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for a whole year they assembled with the church and taught a great many people. And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch."  (Acts 11:25-26)

Here's a fun fact for you: did you know that those who were first called Christians were the disciples from Antioch? That's what we learn from our text above.  What is more important, however, is what it truly means to be a Christian.

Thankfully, our brief Scripture text for today gives us a clue to what a Christian is.  A Christian is a disciple of Jesus Christ.  Conversely, a disciple is a Christian.  So, what is a disciple of Jesus Christ?  The word disciple means a student or follower; therefore, a disciple of Christ is His follower.

No wonder Jesus said,  "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed (John 8:31)."  To abide in the Word of Christ means to obey His word.  Jesus made it very clear that only those who will follow or obey Him can qualify as His disciple.

Are you a follower of Christ?  Do you abide in His Word, obeying it at all cost?  I urge you to carefully consider the alternative if you are not one of Christ's disciples.  Besides the fact that you are not yet a Christian, unless you become one your eternal destiny is that of separation from Christ:

"Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will                 of My Father in heaven.   Many will say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your                     name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?'  And then I will declare to               them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!'   (Matthew 7:21-23)

Day 318 - John 16 - Acts 5

ONE-YEAR JOURNEY OF THE BIBLE
Day 318 - John 16 - Acts 5 (Condition for Salvation)
(To View Past Posts Click: http:/tonyvicreyes1-yearbible.blogspot.com/ )

"Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.  For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call."  (Acts 2:38-29)

It is true that the Bible teaches that salvation is a free gift from God; however, it comes with a condition. In the gospels, both Jesus and John the Baptist preached repentance as a condition for salvation (Matthew 3:1,2; 4:17).  After Jesus resurrected and ascended to heaven, His diciples continued to preach the same message of repentance as a condition for salvation as we see in our text above.

When we do a simple study of our Scripture passage, it becomes clear through the law of non-contradiction which states that contradictory statements cannot both be true in the same sense at the same time, that unless a person repents, he cannot receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, which is a common description of being saved in the New Testament.

Understanding the meaning of repentance, therefore, is supremely important for every human since it is the only way to be saved.  According to Webster dictionary, to repent means to turn away from sin.  One preacher said, "to repent means to do an about face from sin."  When I received the gift of the Holy Spirit one Sunday in August, 1981, I asked God to forgive me of my sins and at the same time I turned my back from sin as my slave master to Jesus as my loving Master.

Not only is salvation conditional to repentance, it also must be tested by obedience.  A profession of salvation without the accompanying proof of obedience is simply that - a profession.  When Peter told his audience to repent, he also told them to be baptized.  Now, he is not implying that baptism is a requirement for salvation - it is not.  He is implying that obedience (in this case demanded through baptism) is proof of a person's profession of faith in Christ.  In other words, a person who says he is saved but is not willing to obey God is more than likely not.

Have you repented of your sins and asked Christ to forgive you once and for all?  If so, do you have proof of your salvation through your obedience to the commandments of God as revealed to us in the Bible?  If you have both repentance and proof of obedience, praise God you can rejoice in knowing that you are truly saved.

Day 313 - John 12- 15

ONE-YEAR JOURNEY OF THE BIBLE
Day 313 - John 12- 15 (How Many Roads Lead to God?)
(To View Past Posts Click: http:/tonyvicreyes1-yearbible.blogspot.com/ )

'Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me'"   (John 14:6)

We have all heard the saying, "all roads lead to heaven."  If that philosophy is true, then, everyone in the world will make it to heaven somehow and no one need worry about the consequences of their actions or beliefs. Jesus, however, taught the exact opposite of the aforementioned philosophy.

So what did Jesus teach about how one could go to heaven?  In our text above, Jesus boldly claimed that He is the only way to God the Father and He categorically excludes all other ways to heaven.  He even added that He is the only truth and the life meaning apart from Him, all things are false and lead to death.

Now, it's one thing to claim to be the only way and truth and life and completely another to prove it.  For example, there is this crazy charlatan named Kiboloy or whatever in Davao City, Mindanao who now has a worldwide following.  This deceiver claims he is the Christ and therefore, is the only way, truth and life.  Does he have any proof to back it up?  Absolutely none.

Jesus, however, not only claimed to be God Himself, as we saw in my last post, and also the only way, truth and life; He also proved it by fulfilling all of the prophecies about the Christ in Scripture.  Just fulfilling even 8 out of the 300 prophecies that He did would have been a mathematical impossibility.

For me personally, though, the change which Jesus made in my life and the fruit He has accomplished in me is the greatest proof that He is in fact the only way, truth and life.  You too can know Jesus personally to be the Way, Truth and Life if you put your complete trust in Him as your Lord and Savior.

Day 311 - John 10 - 11

ONE-YEAR JOURNEY OF THE BIBLE
Day 311 - John 10 - 11 (Did Jesus Claim To Be God?)
(To View Past Posts Click: http:/tonyvicreyes1-yearbible.blogspot.com/ )

'My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.  And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.  My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand.  I and My Father are one." Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him.  Jesus answered them, "Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?"  The Jews answered Him, saying, "For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God."'  (John 11:27-33)

There are several religions that do not believe Jesus is God yet consider themselves Christians.  Among those are Jehovah's Witness, Mormons, and Iglesia Ni Cristo.  These are major cults that are very agressive in their efforts to win converts.  It is very crucial, therefore, for all who count themselves as Christians, to understand if Christ claimed to be God or not.  Why? Because if He did and proved it, then you need to run away from those cults as fast as you can.

When the Jews who did not believe in Jesus asked Him whether or not He was the Christ, Jesus answered them by using the analogy of a shepherd and his sheep.  Then He said what was unthinkable to the Jews, He said His sheep are in His hands and also in the Father's hand essentially making Himself and God the same.  As if to allay any doubt about the point He was driving at, He said, "I and the Father are one."

Opponents of the diety of Christ would explain that Jesus never meant by His statement that He and God the Father were the same but that they were one in spirit or whatever.  The true test, however, of the actual intent of Jesus' claim is in how His audience, in this case the unbelieving Jews, understood what He said.

The apostle John who wrote the book by his name records that the all the Jews who heard Jesus understood that He was claiming to be God, "The Jews answered Him, saying, "For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God," and they backed up their accusation by picking up stones to stone Him for blasphemy.

Yes, the Bible establishes Jesus' claim as God but did Jesus prove His claim?  Absolutely!  Jesus overwhelmingly proved His claim as God by fulfilling more than three hundred prophecies about the Messiah the greatest of which is His resurrection.

Have you doubted Jesus as God?  Look at the facts that all prove Jesus' claim to be God.  Do not let your bias keep you from entering the kingdom of God by refusing to believe in Jesus as your Lord and Savior.

Day 310 - Luke 20 - John 9

ONE-YEAR JOURNEY OF THE BIBLE
Day 310 - Luke 20 - John 9 (You Must Be Born Again - Jesus)
(To View Past Posts Click: http:/tonyvicreyes1-yearbible.blogspot.com/ )

"'Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."  Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?"  Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.  That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.  Do not marvel that I said to you, "You must be born again.'"  (John 3:3-7)

Sadly, there are too many people who do not even know that the phrase "born again" was coined by none other than the Lord Jesus Himself.  In order to understand this most misunderstood phrase in the Bible, we need to study it in its context, that is, "Who was Jesus talking to and what were they talking about?"

The person Jesus was talkiing to in our text above was a Pharasee and a was a member of the Sanhedrin or the ruling council of the Jews named Nicodemus.  Let's call him Nick for short.  Nick was a seeker of truth and he came to Jesus to try to find it.  Jesus told Nick he needed to be born-again in order to enter the kingdom of God.

At first, Nick thought Jesus was referring to physical birth and naturally questioned how a grown man like him could enter his mother's womb to be born again, LOL!  Jesus lovingly explained to Nick that he was talking about spiritual birth; that he needed to be born into the family of God through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus further taught Nick in the succeeding verses that the way to be born again is by believing in Him.  It was in this same conversation that Jesus spoke what is undoubtedly the most famous verse in the Bible:

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him                    should not perish but have everlasting life."  (John 3:16)

To be born again, therefore, means to be saved from the punishment of sin which is everlasting death in hell and, to receive the gift of everlasting life in heaven.  In order to be born again, you must believe or trust in Jesus as your Lord and Savior and that His death served as the substitute for the death that you and I deserved.  If you have done that already, then you are born again.  If not, you must be born again to enter the kingdom of God.
