Day 39 - Leviticus 18-20

ONE-YEAR JOURNEY OF THE BIBLE
Day 39 -Leviticus 18-20 (What God Says About Homosexuality)
(To View Past Posts Click: http://tonyvicreyes1-yearbible.blogspot.com/ )

You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination. Nor shall you mate with any animal, to defile yourself with it. Nor shall any woman stand before an animal to mate with it. It is perversion.  If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them.”   (Leviticus 19:22, 23; 20:13)

Our Scripture passage for today could not have been more relevant in this present generation when homosexuality is being pushed by powerful forces into every society and culture as acceptable and those who oppose it are labeled as homophobic or other similar negative labels.  There is, therefore, a need to understand the Scripture passages about homosexuality including the text above.

Some argue that Bible believers are hypocritical in their belief that homosexuality is a sin as stated in Leviticus and other passages because they do not apply the same beliefs in the forbidden foods that are also stated in the book of Leviticus.  Although their argument may appear valid, there really is no comparison between the sin of homosexuality and that of eaten foods that are forbidden in the Old Testament.

As I have written in a recent posts, forbidding to ear unclean foods no longer applies today for the reason that God has declared all foods as clean in the New Testament.  Such cannot be said about the sin of homosexuality which, as we see, is placed on the same category as a woman mating with an animal.  Who today would argue that such a perverted act as the latter is no longer a sin or taboo?

As Christians, we need be careful not to single out the sin of homosexuality at the expense of watering down other sins such as adultery or theft or lying; the adulterer or thief is no better than than the homosexual as far as the severity of their sins.  All sins are abominable to God and must be confessed and forsaken by the guilty sinner.

Christians need to love homosexuals just as Jesus loved the tax collectors and the prostitutes because that is what Jesus did and continues to do today.  The love of Christians for the homosexual person without approving of his sin is the powerful force that can turn him away from his sin and towards Christ.  May God help us to love all sinners, no matter what their sins are.
