“So Jacob went on his journey and came to the land of the people of the East. … And Jacob said to them, "My brethren, where are you from?" And they said, "We are from Haran."  Then he said to them, "Do you know Laban the son of Nahor?" And they said, "We know him."  So he said to them, "Is he well?" And they said, "He is well. And look, his daughter Rachel is coming with the sheep."  (Genesis 29:1-6)

A brief background of our text is called for here.  Isaac was Abraham’s heir to God’s covenant granting him the land of Canaan and making him a blessing to all nations through the Messiah who would come from his loins.  Jacob was Isaac’s son and the one chosen by God to become the heir to the covenant instead of Esau his older twin brother.  Isaac and his wife Rebecca were grieved with Esau for taking foreign wives who were not worshippers of the God of Abraham.  And so Rebecca convinces Isaac to send their son Jacob to her brother Laban in Haran in order to find a wife from her relatives.

I can’t help but see a strong parallel between Jacob’s meeting Rachel at the well and Abraham’s servant over forty year before who came to the same well and met Rebecca who became Isaac’s wife and Jacob’s mother.  Coincidence?  No way!  It so much like God to orchestrate events in the lives of His followers that leaves us breathless and in awe of Him.

If you read the rest of the chapters in today’s Bible reading schedule, you will learn that God blesses Jacob during his 14-year stay in Haran with eleven sons plus the twelfth son upon returning to his home place.  And if you read the entire book of Genesis, you will learn that just as God repeated reassured Abraham and Isaac concerning their inheritance and of the promise that through their seed of the Messiah all nations will be blessed, God also does the same to Jacob.

I love how God remains faithful to His promises despite our weakness and failures.  Praise God that my eternal inheritance in heaven promised to me and all those who believe in Christ is not dependent on what I can do but on what Christ has done on the cross in saving me and making me a co-heir with Christ of everything that the Father has given to Him.
