Day 9 - Genesis 26-28

ONE-YEAR JOURNEY OF THE BIBLE
Day 9 - Genesis 26-28 (Christ, the Promised Blessing to Isaac)

“Then the Lord appeared to him and said: "Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land of which I shall tell you.  Dwell in this land, and I will be with you and bless you; for to you and your descendants I give all these lands, and I will perform the oath which I swore to Abraham your father.  And I will make your descendants multiply as the stars of heaven; I will give to your descendants all these lands; and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed;”  (Genesis 26:2-4)

In a previous post, I had mentioned that if there is one thing in this world that we can be sure of it is that God will fulfill His promise to Abraham and to his descendants the Jews regarding the specific land boundaries God granted to Abraham in Genesis 15.  In our text above, Abraham had already died and in theory, God’s promise would have died with him had it not been for Isaac to whom the promise continues.

Now God confirms His covenant to Abraham with Isaac and assures him that He will fulfill his promise to give the land to him and to his seed singular, not seeds.  This is key to understanding the promise of the Messiah Who will come from Isaac and who did come in the person of Jesus Christ.  Through Jesus, all the nations of the earth has been blessed.  Those of us who have accepted Christ as Lord and Savior know this blessing first hand.

There can be no greater blessing in life than to be saved from the punishment of sin and to be heirs with Christ of His eternal kingdom in heaven.  Not only that, the believer is blessed with every spiritual blessing including joy, love, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control all of which the Bible refers to as the fruit of the Spirit.  (Galatians 5:22-23)

Thank God He is a promise-keeping God!  Through His covenant with Abraham and Isaac, we have become partakers of the blessing with them through our faith in Jesus Christ.  Do you have the blessing of the fruit of the Holy Spirit?  If not, why not ask Christ to be your Lord and Savior right now?

28But they said, "We have certainly seen that the LORD is with you. So we said, "Let there now be an oath between us, between you and us; and let us make a covenant with you,29that you will do us no harm, since we have not touched you, and since we have done nothing to you but good and have sent you away in peace. You are now the blessed of the LORD."' 30So he made them a feast, and they ate and drank. 31Then they arose early in the morning and swore an oath with one another; and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.  (Gen 26)

The text above is quite interesting in that it is almost identical to an peace agreement which took place between Abimelech and Phichol, his commander, and Abraham back in Genesis 21.  The Abimelech who came to Isaac, however, was most likely the son of the previous king.

It is plain to see that both Abraham and his son Isaac became strong enough to warrant a peace agreement from perhaps the most powerful army of their time.  This clearly shows how God highly favored both men as He swore He would.  "Dear God, I pray that You would bless me and increase my territory on account of Your Son Jesus Christ to whom I belong.  Amen."
