ONE-YEAR JOURNEY OF THE BIBLE
Day 93- 2 Samuel 15-17 (Patience: Strength Under Control)

"'...So let him curse, because the LORD has said to him, "Curse David.' Who then shall say, "Why have you done so?"'  And David said to Abishai and all his servants, "See how my son who came from my own body seeks my life. How much more now may this Benjamite? Let him alone, and let him curse; for so the LORD has ordered him.  It may be that the LORD will look on my affliction,  and that the LORD will repay me with good for his cursing this day."  And as David and his men went along the road, Shimei went along the hillside opposite him and cursed as he went, threw stones at him and kicked up dust."  (2 Samuel 16:10b-13)

Which powerful king would allow a common man to curse him in public and throw stones and dirt at him as he and his entourage walk along the street? Only a king like David who has learned that true strength is exercising self-control and humbly admitting that he probably deserves such humiliation.

David was fleeing from his son Absalom who sought to kill him in order to take control of the kingdom when he was humiliated by this man named Shimei, a relative of king Saul.  Against the advise of his men who wanted to cut off the head of Shimei, David took all the insults and curses as from God and thought that he had no right to interfere with God's punishment on himself.

In all of his mistakes and sins, David proved worthy to be called "a man after God's own heart" because of his meekness and quickness to acknowlege his sins before God.  O how we all need to have the same heart as David so that we would be slow to retaliate against those who hurt us and quick to acknowlege our sins before God.

Father, help us to develop patience and self-control towards those whom we may not like or may not like us.  Help us to acknowlege our sins before you and to accept your punishment with humility and meekness.  In Jesus name we pray, amen.
