ONE-YEAR JOURNEY OF THE BIBLE
Day 97 - 1 Kings 1-3 (The Request That Pleased the Lord)

"At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, "Ask! What shall I give you?" ...give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?"  The speech pleased the LORD, that Solomon had asked this thing." (1 Kings 3:5, 9-10)

I know of no other request to God that the Bible says pleased the Lord besides Solomon's request for wisdom in our text above.  Solomon could have ask for anything including riches and honor but instead he chose to ask for an understanding heart.  It is interesting to note that God was not only pleased to grant solomon's request; He also gave Solomon that which he had not asked for but what everybody wants - wisdom and honor beyond that attained by any other human being.

What would you ask from God He said to you, "Ask!  What shall I give you?"  Now that you know what pleases God, I would hope that you would ask for something greater than riches or honor that do not last forever.  I would hope that you would rather ask for something of lasting value like wisdom or love or faith.

James the apostle and half-brother of our Lord wrote this about wisdom:  "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him." (James 1:5)  James went on to say "But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.  For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways."  (verses 6-8)

When we ask God for wisdom, we can have the blessed assurance that He would be pleased to give it to us liberally and without reproach.  Who among us could not use more wisdome in our life?  And how much better would the world around us be if we had more wisdom to enrich the lives of others?

"Father, please give me, your servant, an understanding heart to bless the people around me.  In Jesus name, I pray.  Amen."
