Day 158 - Job 28-33

ONE-YEAR JOURNEY OF THE BIBLE
Day 158 - Job 28-33 (My Eyes for One Woman)
(To View Past Posts Click: http:/tonyvicreyes1-yearbible.blogspot.com/ )

       "I have made a covenant with my eyes;
        Why then should I look upon a young woman?"
        (Job 31:1)

It could be that Job was the most righteous person who ever lived on this earth.  First of all, no other person apart from Job received the honor of being mentioned by name by God Himself as someone who had no equal with regards to being blameless and upright (Job 1:8)

Secondly, Job, in defending himself from the accusations of his friends as being evil, felt compelled to declare his own righteous deeds.  You can read Job's defense in chapters 29 to 31.  One thing that Job had resolved to do and actually had done throughout his life was to make a covenant with his eyes never to look at another woman lustfully.

To put in perspective what Job had done in keeping himself his eyes pure, it is like cat controlling his instinct to chase a mouse or a lion a deer.  For a man to keep himself from looking at a beautiful woman with desire would take extraordinary self-control and determination as well as a deep-seated motivation for doing (or not doing) it.

No doubt, Job kept his eyes pure out of his great love and fear of God.  The fear of God is perhaps the only motivation that will make a man keep his eyes pure like Job.  I believe no other person is able to be as blameless and upright as Job; nevertheless, all of us are commanded by Christ to keep our eyes pure. Consider these words of our Savior:

           "But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery                   with her in his heart (Matthew 5:28).

          "And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with           one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire... (Mark 9:47)"

Both Job and Christ have made it clear that looking at another person other than your spouse with desire is sinful.  Yet, how many of us can honestly say that we have been keeping our eyes pure?  Thankfully, we can receive full forgiveness for all the times we have sinned with our eyes by repenting and asking Christ to forgive us.

Would you join me in making a covenant with our eyes today not to look at another with lust?  I guarantee you it will not be easy but with God's help all things are possible.
