Day 171 - Psalm 45-49

ONE-YEAR JOURNEY OF THE BIBLE
Day 171 - Psalm 45-49 (Jesus is God)

       "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;
        A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.
        You love righteousness and hate wickedness;
        Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You
        With the oil of gladness more than Your companions."
        (Psalm 45:6-7)

Writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the author of Psalm 45 is unmistakenly referring to two beings in verses 6 and 7.  He calls the one God and the other God as well.  No other place in Scripture does it refer to a human as God.  Therefore, the person whom the Psalmist is writing about oftentimes called the King could be none other than a second person of the godhead in human form.

Traditional Jewish scholars believe that the king described in Psalm 45 does not refer to just any king of Israel but rather to the Messiah.  Judaism rejects the idea that the Messiah is God and believes rather that he is a human.  It is baffling to me, however, that the Jews could not see the plain truth in the old testament that the Messiah is God Himself.  Our text above taken from Psalm 45 clearly proclaims the Messiah as God.

Those who deny the deity of the Messiah from Psalm 45 as well as other references in Scripture to Messianic diety are guilty of twisting the Word of God to suit their own pre-conceived notions of Messiah.
tragically, they miss the very Messiah they claim to be waiting for.  Christians, however, believe that Jesus is the Messiah of the world who is none other than God Himself in human flesh sent to earth in order to die for man's sins so that we might receive forgiveness and eternal life.

Today, as I write this short commentary, is Father's day.  It is a fitting time to reflect on our heavenly Father who demonstrated His love for us in that He sent His only begotten Son Jesus to earth in human flesh in order to die on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins.  Have you acknowledged Jesus as your Messiah and your God?
